Why Are Airplane Windows Tinted on Boeing 787s and How Is It Done?

While all aircraft windows on passenger planes are constructed to be highly secure and reliable while providing visuals outside of the cabin, the specific design of each may vary based on the model of aircraft or operating company. For example, those of Boeing 787 aircraft are known for being devoid of any physical shade, differing from other models where a physical light blocker can be pulled down when one wishes to prevent the entrance of sunlight. Despite this, windows on a Boeing 787 can still block out light with the use of buttons that control tint. As this is a very different method of light control when compared to other aircraft models, one may wonder how the cabin window dark tint feature is possible.

Like all other passenger aircraft windows, the windows present in a Boeing 787 consist of multiple layers for added security. As one layer of glass would be very dangerous in the instance of a break, multiple panels are used to hold pressurized cabin. As such, these window assemblies are made up of two glass layers with a sort of gel mashed between them. This gel is special, featuring electric current running through it. As a passenger presses buttons to control lighting, the electric current within the gel will either increase or decrease as a response.

In the early days of such technology, the darkest setting attainable was a dark blue with the highest amount of current being induced, though this would not completely block out light. Since then, various improvements have been made to allow such gel to turn completely black. As such, gel-based tints can now provide the same light blocking capabilities that traditional window shades can. While the removal of a physical shade and the introduction of electrified gel can increase the amount of wiring needed for construction, there are some various benefits to this choice.

For one, it can provide passengers much more control over the lighting of their window as settings can be fiddled around as needed. Despite this, the more important benefit comes in the form of mass control that is provided to crew members. For example, if the crew wishes to block out light on a red-eye flight by keeping the sunrise out of the cabin, they can manage the current settings of all windows from a single control. As such, changing overall lighting can be done with one button instead of requiring passengers to help close every shade or have flight attendants manually do it. While this can take away some control from passengers, it makes compliance much easier when it benefits the entire flight.

As of the present, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner remains one of the only aircraft models to have such dimming technology as of the present, making it one of the many groundbreaking things the plane is known for. Despite this, more manufacturers have begun to deploy similar technology as it has become more improved and accessible.
